Mazda releasing NEW MX-3, called the "Mazda 3"

i recently read an article and saw a concept pic of the new MX-3, dubbed the "Mazda 3". well, its not exactly a re-introduction of the MX-3, but of the 323, and that's close enough. apparently it is build from the same platform as the Ford Focus. it is scheduled to appear at one of the 2003 car shows (i forget which one). there was only one concept pic, looks promising though. i saw it in a car mag at Chapters, i'll find with mag, and let others know.

The side view of the front end, which is all you can really see, isn't very pretty... looks like a car alright.
Is the trunk a hatchback like the MX-3's?
Not a very exciting picture.

I somehow doubt it, but then again you never know.
If they did make a new one I don't think the styling would be as good.

more info..

Mazda 3 late 2003 PLATFORM and panel sharing with Ford isstarting to lose favour and Mazda is attempting to keep this one all to itself. It will be a scaled-down RX-8 with some Alfa 147 cues such as hidden rear door handles. Engine choices include 1.8, 2.0 and the new 2.3-litre seen on Mazda 6. A sharper, more clever Premacy andan all-out Mazda 3 MPS will follow.
[ July 16, 2002: Message edited by: Custommx3 ]

I'm sorry I really hope Mazda doesn't adopt the style of Fords... that would be the "Bubble" look... ugh!!

i think mazdas kinda goin downhill now that ford bought it out and such. 3rd gen. rx7s are still the best as far as styling, power, and handling, it looks like mazda is goin toward total family wagons in its lineup like every other car maker nowdays.
[ July 22, 2002: Message edited by: Custommx3 ]

Mazdas design on all their cars and trucks are for the most part their own design.
To be honest I dont understand where you got the idea "it looks like mazda is goin toward total family wagons in its lineup like every other car maker nowdays". The only 2 cars I can think of are the "wagon style" the Protege 5 and the MPV. The new sports tuner is like a minivan/wagon meets a sports car. I'd think the Hideout is basically competing w/ the Mini and the other sub-compacts. Keep in mind Mazda has the RX-8,3,6,9,miata, and Atenza. Which alre all coupes. I see where you got the idea, but I dont think the young market wants a wagon. There are VERY few wagons I'd drive, no matter how old I get. If your referri g to the hatch idea, rememeber the MX is a hatch, so will the new Mazda 3. They are competing with the Focus and the Civic SI (the new one). I would think Mazda went to that design only cause of the popularity of the 2 cars as well as the large amount of sales the've had in the past few years.
[ July 22, 2002: Message edited by: Custommx3 ]

i didnt mean specifically "wagons" i meant family cars in general, like the rx-8, sure its a descendant of the rx-7, and it goes fast, yadda yadda yadda, but its now....4 door, the nissan maxima has 240-250 hp whatever, its 4 door, and its a family sedan, they should keep sports cars 2 doors like they're supposed to be and family cars 4 door like they're supposed to be, just IMO, but whatever. and the rx-8 should be turbocharged too...
