If it dies like you say at stop lights, like you hit the gas and it goes sput sput sput than eventually comes back to normal I would check out the distributor(I had to replace mine and that's exactly what it did) I would do this to check it out put a timing light oneach individual wire, start the car and work the RPM from Idle to maybe 2200 I did this and saw a very noticable dead spot no juice at all around 1400 RPM You can test the OHMS for the primary and secondary coil by reading the online shop manual that would be my next step. Send me a note and let me know I checked everything on my car to find this out and know it inside out. I hope you figure it out. I don't believe it would be the plug wire but try temporarily replacing the wire with a wire from another car and see if it helps. let us know how you did, and have faith in the Mazda friend it's slick, it drives smooth and easy and it's a babe magnet what more could you ask for? have a nice day and good luck
