Its called reserve, so that when your light comes on, your car doesn't die right there on the road.
You probably have 50-100k past the light.
In super cold weather I get ~300km on 3/4 tank, and in warmer i get up to 400 and beyond... best tank was 600km to the light.

Indeed it is. I've also kept the Mx-3 always above 1/4. Another reason to not drain the tank is to not get any stuff what would be sitting at the bottom.
Ya, the site lists theMx-3 havinv a 50L tank, I've never was able to put in more than 39L, than 31L once the aftermarket tank bowed from the weight of the fuel.
My K8 used to get my 350Km on a tank max, 300 average. When I went to a ZE and was getting 450, I was quite happy.

I don't understand this "if you empty your tank you'll suck up all the crap" theory. The pickup is at the bottom of the tank....

Indeed, but with less fuel, it's not floating around as much, the crap get concentrated, lol

Thats true, I suppose. The fluid at the bottom sloshes more if there's less fuel in the tank. Thats easy to see just playing with a clear water bottle

I drove the car up on ramps today... drained exactly 3 quarts of ATF which looked slightly brownish pink but still smelled ok. Filled it back up with 2.5 quarts so that it is correct on the dip stick. Shifts smooth as butter from first to second now... alas, no 3rd or 4th.
Honestly, should I try to repair this tranny, swap it with a 5 speed or get a different car? If I go 5-speed, do I need to change the computer or is it a simple swap? I know I would need a different center console, the brake/clutch pedal assymbly... but what else?

Search!
trans
pedal assembly
master and slave
linkage
Some spare wire and a solding iron to hook up clutch switch, neutral switch, and reverse switch.
No ECM, no harness.
The dirty details are on here, many times over.

Man with the vibrations the car goes through, i doubt you got much crap sitting at the bottom...

Uggghhh! My brain hurts!! I just read all 7 pages on that transaxle swap thread. Too many people asking about the same thing in different ways has blurred all the numbers. I will ask a few short questions and move on...
I have a 1992 1.6L SOHC with the ATX.
What is my engine designation or series code? Fill in the blank "_______"
If I were to look at a "1992 1.6L SOHC MX-3 with a 5-speed" What would that transaxles exact code be? "_______"
I am trying to make this as simple as possible for others to understand... The donor car is EXACTLY the same as my car only it has a 5-speed gearbox. This makes for the ideal swap correct? Once I know its MTX code "model" then I can search for that exact code on other MTX's from other cars. No rocket science needed. Just a straight swap, no need for beefier gears, taller, shorter gear sets or different final drive numbers. I will leave the performance upgrading to those who can afford it. I just want to drive my car in more than two gears. Thanks to all.

When the time comes and if it can make it to GA, I will not be selling this MX-3... I will hop in my friends lifted '87 Chevy Short Wide 4x4 and start at the front and drive over this heap. Rest in Peace... no way, rest in pieces.

Its not quite rocket science.
You need a B series FWD engine transmission.
Honestly, that leaves you a LOT of options. anything but a miata. It can be any smallish mazda car between 90 and 96.
323
protege
escort GT
mx-3
need the DS axle, transmisison, linkage, pedal assembly, master and slave, and to run some wires.
check worklogs.
No need to hate on the car just because you can't figure it out...

That still does not answer my questions directly. I could figure it out with direct answers. I am not hating the car, just the fact that a major car manufacturer could engineer something so worthless and then sell it to the masses. Mazda made one of the greatest cars of all time, the RX-7 and then has an ATX under their belt that is worth as much as a bag of hot dog poo. If you can just tell me the exact model of 5-speed that was bolted to this 1.6L 4cyl engine of the same year, same car... I will go find it, put it in, drive it until I can get a real car and sacrifice this car out of pure pleasure. This car should have NEVER had an ATX option.

You have a B6 engine. B-series 1.6l 16v SOHC (single over head cam)
You can almost any F-series trans, or G-series 4cyl trans. If you want identical to what you're car would of had, a 1992-1993 Mx-3 with the 1.6 SOHC will have the trans you want.

No car should have had a auto tranny computers are often the cause of so many problems humans cannot reproduce the human mind in good concience so untill they do that you will always be better than a Automatic vehicle. The concept computers work on is crappy zo so will anything relying on it. Manual tranny all the way! So don't give up on it. The last car I wanted was a mx-3 then I got mine. Its the best car our family has owned and my sisters is right up there swap the tranny and love your car. I will give it a read for you and see if I can find the numbers for you. But I have the v6 model so I might not be able to help... I will look. But DON'T crush it if you don't want it sell it.
Or you could just find
