Any particular reason you are interested in HOK? PPG has good paint line, probably has dealer near you, they stand behind their product. If you are on budget you can go with their Shop Line or Omni paint and still have great results. Even their lower grade paint is better than whatever Maaco's using.
As far as primers you can get good epoxy from SPI and it's cheaper than PPG

Is there HOK dealer near you? Probably not. If you are painting a car and you run out for some reason, etc can you get to HOK asap? When you're painting a car you want something readily available in your area, not wait a week for that paint to get there, your customer's gonna be pissed

I'm not thinking budget, nor availability. I don't have a car to paint yet.
But in the future, when I get my next MX-3, I want the best quality paint I can afford.
HOK seems reasonable, and have a great color assortment. PPG, on the other hand, have one of the most frustrating websites I've ever seen, with no indication whatsoever as to which colors they have, or any other useful info.

So, bang for the buck, which one is better? And is the other one not good?

You can buy paint from PPG and then use SPI clear coat. You want urethane base/clear. It will last for the lifetime of the car if you take care of it.

You can go to your local PPG dealer and they will give you chips to look at. They will have all new cars too, if you like any particular color on new car. You can also look up chips online

Say you get HOK gallon of paint, you shake it, open it up and it's not the right color. What do you do now?
With PPG or S-W I can take that paint back and have them adjust it for me. With the paint that you had shipped.....good luck with that.

You make very good points. To be honest, at this moment I'm pretty much in love with HOK colors. But I will see if I can find a PPG dealer nearby, and go look at some chips, so I can make an informed decision. I'm specifically looking for custom colors, and even contemplating the possibility of mixing them, to get the color I want.
But we'll see. Anyway, I have time, until I can get a car to paint.
