The thing to do would be cut the bottom of the MX-3 to curl under the frame slightly. We'd have to stretch it a little to get it over.

Even better.
Oh.. for those who don't know, it's a Smart car on a Unimog.
Unimog is a BURLY vehicle built by Mercedes for Military, firfighting.. anything that requires a vehicle that can roll over a Hummer.

You have the parts, and the help, and the skills with a welder etc... I say DO IT!
A couple months back, at the local dirt/truck races, there was a vehicle racing, that did what your are thinking about, but they used a camaro for the body.
Fowljesse...Now that would be 1 of two smart cars I would drive, along with the 'busa engine one.

Lets channel the door frames, and weld bars in.
It may not look too bad if the wheels are 2.5" inward.
Yeah.. You should open the wells 2.5" inward.
Put you camera on a tripod, or something, and take pics of both at the exact same distance, and height, relative to the bodies, and photoshop!

I believe that's it's possible to move the rear wheels back a bit on a Jeep, I think it was Extreme4x4. So why can't you move them forward a bit? Could even shorten the axle to facilitate that mod.

You ought to be able to do almost anything with the Jeep frame. Lengthen it to match the MX-3 body. You'd have to have it inspected by a frame shop before you could register it...well here you would...but that's not a big deal if the welding is done by a certified welder.
