dosen't necessarily have to be a K series, could be a rotary too, JDM or USDM...as long as Mazda makes it, and you make it work in the MX3, it's legal in SM/SM2.

Oh...I copied this right from the 2006 rules and it seems to say otherwise. I hope that my interpretation is wrong. I would rather run in SM than E-Modified.
Engine block must be a production unit manufactured and
badged the same as the original standard or optional engine
for that model. Badges that exist as marketing aliases for the
manufacturer will be recognized as equivalents. Swaps
involving makes related only at a corporate level are not
recognized as equivalents.

Creech was correct earlier. Running your bonestock MX-3 with the 1.8 will let you be the most competitive in your class. You really only need good tires and maybe* a few suspension mods.
AFter a few events you'll notice quickly that the driver makes the car; not the other way around.
And for what it's worth. SCCA sucks. NASA is going to take over. SCCA has already copied their HPDE formats. I can see them also copying their classing system too.
