Also keep in mind that the fuel pumo is cooled by gasoline itself.. so its is not a good idea to let it drop to empty most of the time. Of course it happens and having an extra gallon in the hatch does not huurt..but keep in mind that by driving constantly all the way to E loweres the life of the pump and also picks up whatever dirt there is in there if any. Not saying its a sin to do this but it would be adviceable not to let it get to that extreme.

What the hell?!??!? You guys are getting around 600Kms on just one tank??? Are the RS models REALLY that fuel efficient? I haven't tried pushing my luck when the fuel light comes on for very long so I don't really know what limits I have, but for a 38L fill where the gas is right at the lip of the opening to the point where the light comes on and shines it's brightest possible luminence, I get about 320Kms on my GS. Even if I tried pushing my luck with the light on, I think I could only squeeze another 100kms out of the tank at most. Is there really THAT much of a difference between fuel economies between an RS and a GS, or could it also be that I have an ATX as well that's lowering my fuel economy? Someone PLEASE suggest something for me to do to get more mileage out of my tank cuz the fact that you guys are nearly doubling my fuel economy is just so painful on my wallet.

my last tank was crazy. Went 295 miles and only ended up being 10.6 gallons, mixed driving too.

My klze is on crack or something getting awesome a-- economy. I got 33mpg just a couple weeks back.

I think the most i've put in my MX at a fill up was 11.6 gallons. I think my tank is full of debris. I'm gonna drain it later this spring when I get back & clean it out, while smokin a cig of course

mazdubber wrote:In my 1992 MX3 owners manual it says the capacity is 50 litres. I've found the light to be pretty sensitive. When you are on inclines or go over bumps it tends to flicker on and off. I once had the light come on when I had about 100km's to go and not a penny to my name to fill the tank! I was just a starving racing school student. 8) I made it home and even made it to the gas station the next morning! I have driven the car to the point where the engine started to sputter. I would say that that is the definite empty point. I managed to get about 44-45 litres in the tank. I think there is a pocket of air at the top of the tank that can't be filled by gravity because of the location of the filler on the tank. You could probably get 50 in if you pressurized it. But that would be a bad idea.
Confirmed. Tonight, I ended up pushing my gas tank to the bitter end and "accidentally" ran it to the point where it started to sputter. I say "accidentally" cuz I had actually intended to end my "what's the real tank capacity" experiment anyway tonight and just fill it up after I got a couple of groceries. Well, as I left the house to go to the grocery store, it started to sputter a bit after just leaving my house a couple of blocks so I coasted on the lowest RPMs possible and tried to get myself to the gas station as soon as possible. It ended up giving out on me just a few minutes later right across the street from the gas station so I just pushed it the rest of the way there to get to the pump. :P

Anyway, going from the point where the tank was filled to the brim of the opening to the point where it sputtered and quit, the refill on the tank back to the brim was 45L. That said, I can forgive the 5L shortage discrepancy compared to what it says in the owner's manual, cuz like mazdubber said, it might be just due to the remaining space at the the top of the tank and/or the small amounts left over in the fuel lines.

The one thing that still bothers me though is my apparent fuel economy. Out of that 45L I ran it, I only got 412Kms out of it. Which I thought was ok, but I see some of you guys posting on the other mileage thread here:
http://www.mx-3.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=42069 and some of you are saying you're getting around 600Kms!!!! :!:

For those of you running the better mileage, please tell me how you're doing this. Does the 4-cylinder RS model really save THAT much gas compared to the V6 GS that I have?? Could it be that my running an ATX be eating up more gas than if I had gone with a MTX?? What mods do I need to do to improve my fuel economy??

ATX mileage is always lesser than MTX. Why? Because ATX transmissions rob horsepower in order to operate. In the RS model.. with the DOHC 1.6L B6DE with the MTX you will see 105Whp. With the same engine on the ATX you get 88Whp. I dont know the numbers for the GS model or for KLZE.. but with MTX transmissions there is little loss of power from the engine to the wheels. My 94 RS ATX averages about 30 mpg. A MTX RS tuned identically would average 34-35mpg under the same driving conditions. Also.. lighter weight wheels might make a difference in gas mileage.. dunno what your have for rims as far as size or weight.. but the more tire surface in contact with the ground, the more rolling resistance that is present.. skinny wheels will get you better gas mileage compared to fat wheels. This is a very basic generalization.. I have seen some very good threads on wheel & tire size around the forums and their effects on performance.. very good information worth searching for. Also.. additional weight in your car will affect gas mileage. For example.. if I carry around my tool box in my hatch for a full tank of gas (it weights almost 100lbs) I have noticed on average a loss of as much as 20 miles off a normal tank of gas. So remove all unneccessary weight from your car. Do a tune up, plugs, plug wires, cap & rotor, run some fuel injector cleaner through a couple of tanks of gas check your initial timing, K&N air filter (if you dont already have a CAI). This is more or less a basic run down of things you can check and do to increase your mileage. Hope this helps.

Yeah last time i filled up i almost ran out of gas and the car cut out a couple time on the way to the gas station. I got over 49Litres in there and i'm sure i could have got 50 without it overflowing. That got me 450km all city driving.

I have filled up after having the light come one and gone another 20-something miles and still only get 10 gallons in the tank. True, I get much more out of that 10 gallons than I did with my old Jeep (which I upgraded from), but it is boggling as to how much gas I am REALLY supposed to hold.
