sorry about my slow reply man, was in richmond, the IAC should be on the bottom of the TB, its been a while since i had my SOHC, so maybe a SOHC owner on here could help ya better than me

The IAC is stuck to the bottom of the throttle body. If you unhook the throttle cable and some hoses, you just have two bolts and two nuts that come off. Then you can remove the throttle body and the IAC as one unit. clean em both, and test the IAC.
Not the greatest explaination.but you sound like your doing ok. I tried a site search cause I am pretty sure I've seen this question before, but I think it disapeared into the search void.......

well...now im not worried about that anymore...now im having a mojor overheating problem...i checked my therm., and its opening, but im not sure about where the water pump is or how much trouble it would be to get to it or anything...also, my fan doesnt seem like its running sometimes....sometimes it will, and sometimes it wont...right now, its sitting in the driveway;my tailpipes smokin and my engines steamin, and stil;l no fan running....help...PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

I had an overheating problem myself with the SOHC shortly after I bought it used and it was the water pump. I was driving on the interstate, looked down and my temp gauge was clear in the red. I wish they had some sort of light or beep haha.

Anyway according to the mechanic that worked on it it was not much trouble at all to get at...just have some underbody stuff blocking it to remove first. Nothing major as I understand it. Also if you have the 2 fans, one is just for AC and only runs when it needs to but yeah sounds like yours is malfunctioning.

What would give an extra level of concern here is the "tailpipe smokin". Is it white smoke coming outta the tailpipe? If so, it's possible that prior engine overheating caused a blown headgasket and now you might have H20 seeping into one or more cylinders. Doesn't take much of that to show up as billowing white smoke/steam from your exhaust. Does the coolant look normal when you look in the radiator & does the oil on the dipstick look normal. If either appears as a kind of light grey color/sludge then the head gasket is blown. However, if those look normal you can still have a blown head gasket. It just takes a drop of coolant seeping into a cylinder to produce whote exhaust smoke. You could also check the sparkplugs to see what condition they show...

thanks for the input...im leaning more towards the water pump than the head gasket...for a short period of time, my hose coming from my radiator to my reservoir had air being pumped through it...when my car would overheat, i would hear a "boiling" sound...i pulled the downstem out of my reservoir, and it stopped...when i put it back in, bubbles were coming from the downstem...and just earlier when i took my radiator cap off after EXTREMELY overheating, there was NO pressure pushing on my cap...

now ive taken my radiator off and used a high pressure waer hose to check for leaks...no leaks; ever since i overheated, my car wont start it just turns and turns and turns and every so often sounds like its gettin a little gas...then it smells flooded...ive been having trouble with starting though...i have to kind of give it a lil gas to start...anyway, i put the water hose in the water intake of my engine and turned it on and nothing came out of the other hole...im assuming it wouldnt since my car wasnt overheating or much less started for that matter...

does anybody know if you can buy just the filter sock for the fuel pump or clean it instead of buying a whole new pump?

hi,if you overheated your engine,this sucs,your head mite have warped,its alluminum.chec your compression.if its low,thats the problem,it can be worse and have cracs also.sometimes it overheats for any reason,water pump,thermostat,belt off,radiator leak,amd the heat does in the cyl head.its an easy head topull so good luc and post results.

is this post in need of resurrection? my sohc was doing the same once, left me broke down on the way to work, no smoke though, i could let the car idle and after about five - ten minutes, it would shut off, never really consistant on the interavals either, if i tried to start it, it would turn over, almost start, but it wouldnt', i'd leave it for about a half hour or so, and it would start right up, only to die a few minutes later, no CEL's whatsoever, puter wasnt giving me anything, while the car was on i knocked on my maf sensor, the car stumbled and turned off almost instantly, it started back up, and it did the same thing when i tapped it pretty hard with my fingers, i went to the junk yard and grabbed a maf off of a 323 for 40 bucks, slapped that sucker on and poof! it was fixed. if it starts up check the weep hole on the water pump, it might give you some indication when you rev the engine, if your water pump is going bad. i believe one of those sensors on the gooseneck(thermostat housing) is for the fan control, i could be wrong, i had to change it once cause i accidently bumped it and snapped it while doing something on the car, (60 bucks at the dealer, none of the parts houses even had it in their books, they kept looking at me like i was crazy when i would bring the piece in)
