what causes repeated tranny problems?

Post by maniac »

What could be the cause of my car repeatedly having problems with transmissions? I am now on my 3rd tranny since i bought my 92 rs. Is this sohc just too much power for it? I think not. The fluid level seems fine but I just swapped in another one and now its coming out of gear voluntarily again. Bad seals somewheres? What can be causing this?

had the same problem first time all the gears grinded and made a load noise. took it to some tranny shop they reconition my tranny $1100 3months before they put in my clutch. less the 6six months same problem got it fix free since under warrenty. them the gave another warrenty but just 3mon. guess what another 6mon it breaks again $2000 to get it rebiult. well one off my friends knew a guy that does traany good price damn good job. so i took it to him $825 to get my tranny rebuilt with a performance clutch put on as well. the guy told me that who ever did my tranny work didn't know what the **** they where doing using used gears putting them backward not sealing correctly. give me all my old gears back all off them were FUBAR. u can see a partern they probly did it on perpose so that i can bring it back. been almost year since and no tranny problems. i hope u get the point laters

Most problems stem from abuse.

...or by not knowing how to shift. Do you frequently grind your gears?

Burn out, barely ever and never since my new one less than 1000 kms ago. Yes, i know how to shift and rarely grind a gear. Checked my tranny oil level tonight and it was really low, filled it back up a bit and am gonna drive it into the shop tonight to check all the seals. Any place common where these things might leak?

i know my 92 RS had an issue with a drive shaft vibrating a bit and it kept eating the seal around the axel shaft (went through 3 of em before i figure it out) on the tranny that keeps the oil in, might try looking to see if you got a puddle of gear oil after it sits overnight (mine had to be on a slight incline to) i replaced the shaft and was all happy

Also, what type of gear oil do you use. There was a post here last week or so (hopefully the search can find it) where some people were mentioning that certain kinds of gear oil will eat up our syncros. It was something to do with copper being used if I recall.

Well i think i saved my current tranny by shutting it down as soon as it kicked out of gear. Last night it went up on the hoist and inspected the gears and they appear to still be intact. The fluid level was really low though. Filled it back up with i think 75w80, cant remember right now. Gonna keep a close eye out for leaks now.
