Well...it would help if we knew what model it was, and year does matter between 93 and 94.

If it's a 4 cyl, there are 3 possible engines that you can put in (1 choice for best performance but requires some slight modifications) You could also go with the turbo variant but that is even more expensive.

If it's a 6 cyl, there are also 3 possible engines (again 1 choice for best performance that requires slight modifications.)

Cost can be anywhere from 400-2000 if you do it yourself, or up to 5000 if you pay a shop. I paid $800
for my KLZE, plus you will need to factor in everything you will buy for the engine (clutch, fluids, tbelts, etc.)
You can do it for under 2k if you really pinch.

The 6 Cylinder will cost you more than the 4 to replace, but if you go with the high performance KLZE you will have 200hp...

And lastly, please search. All the answers are here. Check the FAQ's also. I was kind enough to help but we get frustrated when people don't use the tools here!

4 Banger cars - protege, ford escort, engine importer

6cyl - probe, mx6, other mx3 or engine importer (for KLZE)

well, just got done reading the faq, and it seems like the one post that would have given me the most info, doesnt have the info anymore. the interchangeability post. i was at junkyard today and notice a few of what i believe were B series motors. i even glanced at a mazda v6, 2.5 i believe. id love to swap in a v6, but im gonna go way cheap on this. btw, i work at a full service auto repair shop so ill have every tool ill need to do this job. btw, how much do these cars weigh? also, looks like some people have swapped in the bp, the 1.8 for the 1.6, does the interchangeability matter between the two generations of mx3?

I found another copy of that page and asked Barry to change the link, so it works again.

Good luck!

sounds like you have a 4cyl. Also sounds like you have the SOHC

plop a BP into it. plug and play with two exceptions- you need to splice into a new connector and run two new wires to the ECM, and you need to splice a plug from the new motor into the old harness. Can be done for very cheap. ~$500 would do it for you with reasonable part replacement. Motors have a history of being quite invincible is taken care of.
Now with Moderator power!

Black GS - Summer DD/Race car - Fancy KLZE
Red GS - K8-ATX -> MTX-KLDE - Frakencar. Scrapped
White GS - Rusty. Parts. Scrapped
1997 BMW M3 - my summer baby
2002 BMW 325Xi - sold
2003 Forester Xti - EJ20K swapped.
