Acrylic enamel safe for swirl remover/rubbing compound?

Post by nightfire »

Hey guys,

Any bodywork experts here?

I painted the passenger side of my car with acrylic enamel (HVLP gun). I had some moderate orange peeling, so sanded with 2000-grit, then rubbing compound, then swirl remover (all 3M).

The orange peel is gone, and it's perfectly smooth. But, I seem to have ruined the paint!

For some reason, now matter how much polishing I do on the sections I rubbed down, it won't shine. It's a dull, scratchy finish. I'm 100% certain I haven't gone back down through to the primer because there's a place with a small paint drip that I didn't fully sand out, and the drip looks the same.

Am I doing something wrong? Is acrylic enamel safe for rubbing compound? It's a 1-part, with no top coat... just color.

I waited 4 days before doing this, and on another part I painted 2 weeks ago, I'm getting the same results. :(
