Are factory spoilers prone to crack?

Post by Nightrunner »

Hi All,

Relative noob here. I bought a 95 MX-3 1.6L auto a few months back. Pretty good shape and only 80K. But there is this long crack along the trailing edge of the spoiler (basic spoiler not the wrap-around). The crack spans most of the width of the car. I'm guessing the PO or PPO used to push down hard on the spoiler to close the hatch. Anyway is this a weak point on the MX-3, or is it just that mine got pressed hard?

To fix, I'm thinking of just gently prying apart a little bit and working some fiberglass resin into the crack, and then gently clamping it together while it drys. Then sand the rough edges and paint. I've never repaired fiberglass before. Anyone else ever have to repair a cracked spoiler?

I did search on this but most spoiler posts are about how to get the stocker off or which aftermarket one to use.

Thanks
Scott

I've never seen or heard of one cracking that way. Could have been some sort of mishap that caused it.

Is this the GS spoiler on the RS hatch, or the regular hatch garnish? I've also never seen this problem before, they must have smacked something against it!

I've seen the basic RS garnish crack.. it is a relatively thin plastic... I've NEVER seen a GS spoiler break/crack... they are too thick you'd have to take a hammer or something heavy to it
