headliner

Post by rayinala »

I have a 92 GS without any type of headliner. It has the sunroof. No headliner of any sort. I believe that it should have some type of cardboard/foam liner then a "headliner" glued onto that. What can I do?

I Haven't been able to find one in a junk yard. Wsa hoping that there was some trick to make one out of cardboard or thin wood. I have not been able to find one online either. The car is uncommon in Alabama.

You can't make one... there formed right to the roof.... I still don't understand how you can not find one... You MUST have a MAZDA dealer in Alabama...

Colin, what are you talking about? The headliner is removable and replacable, it is not made into the car. If you cannot find one at the junkyard and do not want to pay Mazda for a new one you can have an apholstery shop make you one. You can try to make one yourself, but I bet it is going to be tricky. A headliner is basically three layers. 1 the carboard backing, 2 a very thin foam liner, 3 the fabric. Healiners are usually a very specific fabric that is not going to be that easy to find. See if you can find a place that sells automobile fabric online. Then contact them about your wanting to make a headliner for a car that does not have one for you to work from. Hopefully they can set you up with the proper materials to recreate your own. The hardest part is going to be getting the contour of it right. The roof is not flat and the carboard backing is going to need to be shaped before you install it. You can maybe glue the whole ting to the roof of the car to get the proper contour, but if the glue fails or you want to remove it later you are stuck.

OK you CAN make one... but let me know how that looks and works... I would love to see the results....
And I said FORMED TO THE CAR, as in fitted to the shape of the roof... read first! I did not say it was a piece that you can not remove! Ohhh what do I know I only made mine Purple by taking it out...
It will cost way more to make one or get one made.... I got a qoute of $400 to do mine.... and thats just to recover it in Purple, thats not even to make it from scratch.
