Motorized Hatch Glass?
I think this is an original idea, and I hope this is the right forum.
You know how sunroofs are motorized and slip up, down, back and forth? What if we made the hatch glass detatchable from the rest of the hatch, and able to lift via a motor. Just so it was horizontal or something.
I suppose one could argue just motorizing the hatch would be way easier... Has anyone driven with the hatch open?
I was sitting in my Black RS with no air conditioning for three hours today.

I'm sure it would be cool to have, but the amount of money you'd have to spend to make it possible would be so uncool.

Re: Motorized Hatch Glass?
Yeah, I thought about it more... It doesn't really make practical sense. Making the seal would be kinda difficult too. Imagine the downforce you could create though
Then again, some chain, a pulley, a rod, and this spare wiper motor.... and some weatherstripping... a hinge or two...

Re: Motorized Hatch Glass?
i dont really get the point in this ...
but i did remember one thing.
What about making our sunroof, into a glass one ?
You could get a window glass ( i think they are bigger then the sunroof ) and cut it down to size.
Then u would get some tint in it.
Remove ur sunroof, take the rubber from it and place your glass sunroof.
It would be heavier, but way cooler .

Re: Motorized Hatch Glass?
See, the thing is I don't have a sunroof. It is a bad idea, but I think it could be cool, somehow...

Re: Motorized Hatch Glass?
I think I get what you're saying. Correct me if I'm wrong.. You want to be able to open the hatch glass from the driver's seat, to let fresh air in, while driving?
If you could rig it so that the very top of the glass lifted about an inch, you'd get all the air you could want, without alot of aerodynamic drag. If you open it from the back, you could sick from exhaust fumes, and possibly die. It's possible that the vortex of exhaust wouldn't make it all the way up into the glass, since the air from across the top of the car would be pushing it down. It would kill your gas mileage.
It's a cool idea, but for all the work it would take to make a good seal, find the right actuators, stick them to the glass, and rig the wiring, you could make a really nice sunroof. If it's just for show, and the judges would like it, I say go for it.

Re: Motorized Hatch Glass?
Yeah thats pretty much exactly it. Whether the back or the front would lift, I don't know. Back does result in exhaust beign pulled in, not bad at highway speeds though. I drove 60k with my hatch open bringing my hood home. If windows up front are open its no problem.

Agreed. I have a moonroof and it absolutely opens up the cabin, here's a pic of it.OutlaW wrote:i dont really get the point in this ...

As for the motorized hatch glass, I think it would look pretty slick, but I'd rather just have the whole hatch motorized and not have to worry about extra sealing issues.
