Xbox --> Xbox Media Center for nearly free (softmod)

Post by Vanished »

WELL! I decided the other day, that I should buy an Xbox. After thinking about it for a little less than a minute, I relies that this could be a perfect media center for my vehicle.

Things you'll need:

- An Xbox and a Computer
- The original Splinter Cell game
- An XBOX compatible USB drive (http://xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_USB_Compatibility_List)
- USB cable extension
- Crossover/Ethernet Cables and or a Router (depending on how you FTP the files from the PC to Xbox)

Step 1: Software to download
-Action Replay
-mIRC
-FlashXFP
-USBView
-Xbox Media Center
-Krayzi Ndure Installer

To get Krayzi Ndure Installer, follow this tutorial
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php

Making the USB to Xbox Cable

Take your usb extension follow this tutorial
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbox ... -cable.php

Format your USB drive to FATX from FAT32
- Turn on the Xbox, plug in the usb drive, and select 'Memory' from the xbox screne. It should say that your memory isn't working, and it has been earased. THIS IS A GOOD THING

- Plug your USB drive into your computer and Open USB view. Click USB mass storage devide and you should see this.

Image

- write down the idVender and idProduct numbers of your usb drive

- Go into the folder were you installed Action Replay and open up the Drivers folder, and open XBREADER.INF in Notepad.
Scroll down to [_Devices_] and make a new entry with the idVender and idProduct numbers you got from USBView. It should look like this

Image

- Save and close, then open up action replay.

- Right click on My Computer (in start menu or on desktop, were ever you have it) and click Properties, go in the Hardware tab and click Devices. Scroll down to the bottom and Select your usb drive. Right click and click 'Update Driver'. Click "No, Not this time" when it asks to search for software, then 'Install from a specific Location'. Click "Maxdrive Xbox" and hit next. Install it and then close it.

Upload the files!

This is pretty straight forward. Open Action Repaly, and you should see your memory card on the left side. Now on the memory card you need to place two files. In the Krazies Exploit folder, transfer the udata.zip files from the folders SC save 1[\b] and SC save 2 to the 'Memory' (left side of the window)

Now uplug the USB drive and plug it into the xbox and turn it on. Select Memmory - Controller Device (1,2,3, or 4..) then select the two files and hit 'Copy'

Run the installer!

Now, put in the Splinter Cell game into the xbox and remove ANY savegames you have! Select the Linux savegame and it will open up a blue xbox screen.

Follow the instruction on screen, and before you know it you'll be running Evolution X, a differnt xbox dashboard.

Uploading Xbox Media Center to the Xbox

To do this, you have to connect the Xbox to your computer. Use this tutorial http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/213943 to do that (either with a crossover cable, or with a router and ethernet cables). Transfer the entire contents of the XBMC folder (unzipped of course) over to the xbox hardrive E:/Apps or E:/Dashboard if you don't want Evolution X to ever run.

NOW YOUR SET!

Videos Music Games Pictures

To run these on XMBC, make three folders in the E:/ Drive on your xbox called Pictures, Music, Videos and Games. When you select Music on XBMC, it will show all the music in the Music Folder! Same goes with videos and pictures, games are under the programs menu.

If you want more info on XBMC, check out this site
http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/ind ... ine_Manual

If you have any questions, let me know!

Also, if you don't have splinter cell you can use 007 Agent Under Fire (NOT the platinum hits version) or Mechassault (must be a certain serial number). All versions of Splinter Cell work (ONLY the first one, not pandora tomorrow or anything other one..just the original) If you want to use other games, you need tranfer over the corresponding files from Krayzies Ndure package.

NOTE TO MODS: If there are any policies about hacking hardware and software, as well as making Video/Music/Game "Backups", I apologize for creating this thread, and it's no problem if it has to be removed.

I did this to mine a year ago. Xbox is a great music/movie/internet multi-media centre for your home theatre.

Great idea to put it in the car!!! did you upgrade the harddrive to put games/movies/music on it? that's my next step!!

Actually yes I just got a 120gig HD from a buddy for 15 bucks! He also has a 60 gig for sale for 5 haha...I'm actually currently working on putting it in right now, should be awesome when it's done.

If you don't have a modchip this is how to do it.

Hey just a quick update on this whole deal, I got the harddrive in and it's awesome...just have to load it up with music and videos, i've already ripped a half a dozen games onto it here and there.

I got an motomaster digital power inverter (400W) and it works perfectly, just hardwired it to the battery, have it in the glovebox. The only probelm is, the screen is upside down (s---) and it's rivetted on. So i'm going to fix that, and then post pics!
