Strange Noise

Post by METALLICRUISER »

 I searched but couldn't find a thread on funny noises/rattles.
We could start this as a thread to post on these noises... here goes..

Hey everyone, thanks for the welcome. I have a 1996 MX-3 RS auto. No turbo nor any mods. 130 000kms (Precidia!)

There is a weird noise that happens when it goes from 2nd to 3rd gear if I really step on the pedal. The sound is strange, like a broken Turbo hiss. The noise isn't there if I drive like I'm 80 years old and don't accelerate fast, but I like to gun it! Mechanic thinks its a problem with the exhaust and wants to swap it for a new one for a grand. Any other suggestions to check? (I've been browsing this site and I already know of the common thing to check the air boot for cracks/leaks.)

Best regards all,
JC

Can you replicate the sound in neutral?

Loose exhaust heat shields are a common cause of rattling. DO NOT let your mechanic charge you a thousand dollors to do the exhaust, when it could be something as simple as this.

Also, I built my own exhaust and left out the resonator, and have the same issue. It's got a raspy sound when I really step on it at a certain rpm. Seems to get better as the engine warms up though.

I can’t replicate that sound in neutral. I only hear it when I go from 2nd to 3rd gear.
Strangely, I didn’t hear it at all today. I notice I hear it more when my gas tank is half or lower. The tank was full today, so maybe that’s why I didn’t hear it. I should record the sound next time. LOL

Thanks for the reply Winnipeg!
