separating the tranny from the motor.......

Post by timexim »

I'm sure I'm not the first to have issues doing this. All the bolts are out and I have pry'd the tranny about 1/4-1/2 inch from the motor but it won't come out any further. I'm tried adjusting jacks and have rattled it and pry'd like crazy but it just won't move further. Anyone have any tricks or suggestions as to why it ain't moving any further?

The splines get stuck. Try some WD or other penetrating fluid. Squirt it on the input shaft of the trans if you can. If not then jsut squirt it all over the inside in the hope you'll hit it. Make sure you clean it all up when it does come off. Make sure you aren't running into the suspension cradle that bolts to the frame jsut behind the trans. It will run into the diff part of the trans case.
They can be a PITA, but usually come apart more easily with finesse instead of brute force. I know it gets hard to keep calm. Every time I get pissed and start yanking I just wear myself out. I take a minute and look it over and find why it is sticking and it comes right off.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give that a shot tonight and hopefully it works. I've checked and it's not getting stuck against anything, I can wiggle it around pretty easily. What kinda sucks about it is my friend that knows about this stuff an was helping threw his back out at work yesterday just when we are at the part that I need his help for lol. I'll get it myself, I know I will, just gonna take a little work.

On my parents old accord which had a WICKED clutch...

Somehow  ... The clutch splines actually twisted a little up onto the tranny splines...lol... took like 5 hours to beat it off with a soft blow hammer...

Well I got it off. Found out I'm an idiot. I didn't think to take the little sheild on the bottom of the bell housing off. So it was catching the flywheel. Once I took that shield off it came off really easy. But what i saw when I got it off was horrifying. Pieces of metal in the bottom of the bell housing, shift fork broken as expected, throwout bearing in peices, and the pressure plate was destroyed. Tommorow I'm gonna have to search for a flywheel also cuz the one guide pin for the pressure plate was smashed a bit so I had to trim it with my dremel to get hte pressure plate off. While it wasn't much, it will obviously affect the balance of the flywheel. And I'm figuring the metal chips in the bottom of the bell housing had a hand in chewed up the starter. I just got this car so I'm seriously wondering what the heck the last owner did to pull this crap off. I have a few questions though aswell. The clutch kit I got came with the throwout bearing and a really small bearing about 3/4-1 inch in diameter. Not sure what this goes to as I don't see one in my bell housing but most of the stuff is shredded anyways. Also, on the shaft that goes into the tranny, I found an aluminum cylinder on the shaft that is about 3 inches long. Was this suppose to be connected to the tranny? Also, any specific stuff that should be used for cleaning the bell housing and parts?
