Clutch Slipping?

Post by tysoe »

OK, I have recently started working on my MX3 again. It hasn't been used much in the last couple of years. And one thing that always annoyed me was the clutch.

About 4000 miles ago I had the clutch replaced as it seemed to slip a lot. It worked fine for about 4 months.. After which it started to drag like crazy again and didn't seem any better than before. It seems to slip like its on its last legs and I cant maintain momentum when changing through the gears.

Reading on the forums, I noticed thet the OEM clutch is supposed to be bad, but surely it can't be THAT bad???

My other car is a Miata which I love dearly, and having done 90k miles on the original clutch in that car, I don't think I'm the problem unless the replacement clutch was faulty.

Just wanted to know what people thought, because sometimes it can take what seems like a couple of seconds for the clutch to engage properly in the MX3 by which time I'm out of the powerband.

You could pull the tranny and check the clutch disc for wear. If it looks good, maybe you have a faulty pressure plate or maybe something isn't allowing the clutch to fully engage. You could put a 93-97 Probe GT pressure plate on it.

hey thanks for the tip :)

I just looked on ebay clutch kits and they had full Exedy kits with bearings for probe GT, MX3 and MX6 etc for $106 compatible from 1.8L to 2.5L :)
