Thinking on getting another MX-3

Post by MXTreleaven »

Hey guys, I had an MX-3 a couple years ago...here is a pic of it

Image
(it looks blue but it was definately purple)

Anyways, my current car seems to be dying so I have been looking around for a replacement vehicle. I found a 94 MX-3 with a KLZE in it that has 100,000 km's and a magnaflow cat back exhaust. I just want to know a bit of history on the KLZE, and how hard it will be to certify and etest a car in ontario with a japanese engine...

If you guys could let me in on the following information that would be greatly appreciated because I want to get back in to the MX-3 scene.
Expected 1/4 mile, top speed times with KLZE and cat back
Expected repair costs
Insurance costs?
Hot rod qualification?
Historical problems with engine/94 mx3's
Thanks alot for any info you can provide

A ze mx3 expect to run any 14 to 15. agood driver should be able to get a 14.5 and depending on mods. AS for etest it shouldn't be a problem. depending on if it has a ze ecu or not.The ecu will also affect quarter mile times. a bunch of people around here nd4spedse and kpt23 have both takin there ze's for etests within the opast few months and had no problem passing and the paperwork thinks its a k8. You can run under hot rod category since the motor displacement is bigger. But why bother if you can pass as a 1.8L.

Repair will be the same as an mx3 sicne the ze is such a smillar motor. any internals wopuld be from an mx6 or probe.

As for insurance they won't ever know. They might see the exhaust and thats it.

Low 14's to Mod 15's, pending on mods, car, motor health and driver.

Redline in 5th gear, about 230km/h

Cheaper since the KL's are much more common than the K8. (Probe, Mx-6, Millenia, 626). The only things that are different from the DE to the ZE is the head intake runners, intake manifold to match the head runners, Higher-compression pistons, and cams (unless you get the Millenia ZE). Even then, all the external components to the motor (starter, pumps, belts and pullies) are the same between the KL and K8 (and KF) anyway.

They don't have to know, and if your a good driver, they shouldn't have to care. There are only a few minute difference you can tell from the engine bay, and that's only if you know what to look for. Unless you know k-series motors, you can't tell. If you tell insurance companies, they'll probably drop you. I know they dont like to insure vehicles with aftermarket boost kits.

No need if the motor is runing properly, even without without the EGR. My old K8 failed e-test and I paid for the excepted pass (back then it was only $200). My ZE has passed twice so far, both as a K8

Nothing really or any different than the K8, and nothing spefically wrong with 94 Mx-3s. Most recalls where for the 92-93's, and for minor stuff (auto-belts, alternator, springs)
