Grinding Noise

Post by Slade »

Hey everyone

Recently a new noise has come to visit my MX. It sounds as if its coming from the front passenger side of the car. It sounds as if its metal rubbing on metal and it goes with the speed of the car. I have taken the wheel off and looked to see if the brakes were rubbing at all and everything is tight. The only thing I have left to check is the dust shield behind the rotor. The noise is there while driving strait, and goes away when turning right, but not when turning left. Its not a CV joint as I know what it sounds like. Any idea what else it could be?

the guard behind the rotor is like a pie plate. thin and flimsy, replace it or kiss it goodbye and that'll likely fix your problem!

Try flexing the dust shield slightly and try another drive to see if the noise persists.

Sounds like that plate is rubbing the rotor. Make sure it's not touching. If your sound is like a rumbling, then it's a wheel bearing.

It is the wheel bearing..Talked to a couple people and the noise describes it. My dust plate is missing so I knew it wasnt that off the get go. Looks like I will be replacing it soon. Have one member that offered to help. Any idea on the cost of the bearing and how hard a job it is? Its the front passenger side on a 93 RS.

THanks

Takes a few hours, best price in the US is RockAuto.com, sot about 50-60 dollars. Make sure to get new spindle/bearing seals. Replace both at the same time. When one goes out the other is quickly on its way.
You have to have a press to get the bearing out and the new one in. Make sure to take our time and remeber how the old one came out. If you mess up getting the new one in it will most likely seperate when you try to get it out to fix your issue and then you need a new one. When you get the old one out you'll see that the bearing will come out in two pieces. One piece that you press out and one piece will stick to the hub. You have to cut the half off the hub with a dremel (using a fiberglass disc). Make sure not to cut the hub. It doesn not need to be completely cut through, just almost and then you should be able to hammer it off using the flat edge of a screw driver.
Really not that hard, use the online shop manual to see the way it is put together and the rest is pretty simple.

If I wanted to could I order a whole new hub like this ? http://replacement.autopartswarehouse.c ... howdc=true and make it a lot easier to do myself than replacing the bearing itself? This way I wouldnt need to find a press to push the bearing in for me?

Thanks
