transmission problems

Post by Silver_Wraith »

I recently purchased a 93 mx-3 v6 gs 5spd and the only problem that i'm getting is that i have a lot of play with the stick while in gear and when i give it gas it moves the stick. the problem is that its slippin out every now and then in 3rd and a lot in 5th. I was wondering if this might be a common problem with this type of car or if i got suckered into into a lemon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go underneath your car and check out the shifter linkage and the brace which runs along side of the linkage. Also check the bushings at both ends of the shifter linkage and see what you come up with.

My MX-3 does not move the stick while it's driving, however my Miata definitely does, and it's almost brand new. So I don't think it's too strange of a thing. It's definitely not normal for it to pop out of gear though....

The miata shifter is right into the tranny where as the MX-3 shifter is remote. The MX-3 shifter shouldn't be moving. It could be a tranny problem but check all the connections to it first. The bolts on the linkage maybe loose or the bushings could be worn away. If the bushings are bad there are several companies that selll better tha nstock ones.

I appreciate the advice but as it turns out the gears for 3rd and 5th were shot so i've had to replace the tranmission altogether. About the bushings i'll Definalty take that tip up win i switch to the shorter shifter =). Thanx again
