Something Strange....
Something Strange....
Hi,
I just bought a '92 Black MX-3 GS, and I haven't had this much fun since I had a '77 Trans-Am when I was a teenager.....Anyways lately my car has started to do some sort of strange shake when I accelerate heavily in first and second.
***This does not happen all the time! It mostly happens when cold or when starting out. It seems to smooth out after the car has driven a couple miles.
Does any know what this might be? It has good power, and the front is all new (drive line, tie rods, Eagle GT Tires).
If anyone can let me know what they think before I take it to the local dealer, it would be a great help.
Thanks alot.
Mac

Re: Something Strange....
It might just be because the engine is cold...mine runs kinda weird when i first start it up too. It goes away when the temp gauge goes up right?
Re: Something Strange....
It's weird because I let my car warm up idling for about 30 mins until it was good and warm, but it still did it! It doesn't do it always. But when it does there is like a "thump, thump, thump" getting quicker as I accelerate and then nothing until next shift...but it smooths out and there feel like a litle lack of power when this is happening. I guess I'll have a full tune up done with the oil change and see if it helps.

Re: Something Strange....
Last winter, my car did kinda the same thing. I had my injection system cleaned up and started using the same kind of gas (Chevron with Techron) and it stopped acting weird. It might not be your problem but doing that can't hurt your engine and your wallet. Like they say, "if the symptoms persist, consult your doctor"....lol
Just my 2 cents.
Also i heard somewhere that getting your car to warm up at idle speed (still parked) is not very good for the engine....

Re: Something Strange....
I think I'll have the CV's checked as well when I get the tune up done...Driving in this morning it seemed to do it again after I turned my first corner and you could definitely feel it everytime I turned the wheel to the right...Is it normal to only do it when accelerating though??? If the clutch is in or I'm coasting it won't do it. I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I'm slowly learning...Thanks for the responses.

Re: Something Strange....
Just wanted to thank everyone for their help...Turns out the right side axle shaft was no good. Even though it was new, my "spirited driving" seems to have gotten the best of this little aftermarket part that the former driver had installed.

Re: Something Strange....
I had the same problem. The CV on the diferential side was going out. I replaced both sides while I had everything apart. It's been a year now and I am having the same problem again. I was wondering if there might be something causing the extra stress on the CV? I checked the engine mounts etc last time I was under there. Any other ideas?
Marc

Re: Something Strange....
It could also be your bearings. The sound you describe sounds like a problem I had a couple months ago and the sound totally dissapeared when I got new bearings put in.

Re: Something Strange....
zytariuk
CV = Constant Velocity joint
Your FWD (Front Wheel Drive) has axles that transmit the power from the engine to the front wheels, no? Since the wheels move up and down in an arc, then the length of the axles must change with this movement. The CV joint allows this to happen. CV joints are protected by a rubber boot. If the boot cracks the grease leaks out and dirt gets in, then the CV joints' parts start to wear in a hurry. Worn CV joints cause shaking, jerking, crunching noises, etc.

Re: Something Strange....
I thought it was the bearing at first last time and changed it out on the passenger side. The only problem with that analysis is that it only really happens under power and it doesn't seem to matter which way the wheels are turned.
Thanks for the comments.
Marc
