"Beefing" the Auto transmission

okay so I know this isn't a popular idea (swapping to MTX is the norm) but I was wondering what it would take to make the ATX in our cars reliable? What are the weak points?
Obviously it's got to do with the cooling capabilities of the transmission, and an external cooler fixes part of it, but how can you make it as reliable as the motor it works with?
I'm probably going to end up not swapping an MTX over.. nobody really to help me with that project and I don't know if I want to partake in another swap again. Plus, the girlfriend couldn't drive a stick for health reasons, so if we ever become more serious, she'd want an auto car. It just seems to fit.
