Hi,
I have a 96 1.6 auto mx3

I bought a starter button kit online when i go to fit it the instructions say there should be two thick wires coming from the ignition barrel, but there are 4,

1 thin black

two blue/violet

and one thick black one.

Does anyone know which 2 of these i need to use?

thanks

The instructions are going to be universal, and not specific to this car. The wiring colors are different for different vehicles. Regardless of whether you know for a fact which wires to connect, you should always test them first with a 12 volt test light.

Likely you are looking for the constant power wire, and the starter wire. Constant power will always show 12 volts, and I believe is a heavy black wire, and starter will only show 12 volts with the starter engaged (and clutch depressed if manual transmission vehicle).

Get yourself a test light before going any further.

**Edit: Starter wire should be black with blue stripe.

thanks for your reply

i kinda figured the thick black one was important but the two violet/blue are the same so are you saying that only one of these is the starter?
oh and thanks i do need a tester :)

Starter should be black/blue, not violet/blue. Unless you're looking at the colors wrong. You need to probe the wire you suspect is the starter wire with a test light while cranking the engine. The starter while will ONLY show 12 volts while cranking.

Thought i would let you know I finally sorted it out and you where right, i was looking at the wrong side of the ignition! also that the previous owner had piggybacked the alarm through those same wires so it was all very confusing but actually pretty simple, i am now the proud owner of a light testing kit.

many thanks
:D
