crunch into second

it seems alot of times when im racing and i shift to second it makes a crunch sound, im pretty sure i have the clutch in all the way, because i know its gunna happen almost everytime.

yup. try double clutching once it starts crunching when you're not racing. Obviously you don't wanna double clutch in a race and all, but if it starts crunching in daily driving, double clutching will prevent the crunch.

i hate to break it to u all but double clutching is a waste of tyme. none of the big racers do that shyt and in fact my times where slower when i did that shyt vs when i just pedel to the medal. sorry to break ur hearts guys its really a waste of time.

it only does it when im racing...its fine the rest of the time, except i have a problem with going into first sometimes...and when i say it crunches into second...i dont mean grind...it doesnt grind at all it goes right into gear but the trans makes a crunch sound real fast when i shift into it real fast.

I'd still say it's the sychro. Double clutching originally was done in the past because old gearboxes did not have syncros and so you had to double clutch to allow the gear to align. The fact that it only crunches when you shift quickly points to a worn or 'slow' synchro. Having trouble shifting into first could be the same issue. 1st and 2nd get used the most in traffic and so will wear out first. You could check/ bleed your fluid but I doubt thats it.

That's why I said don't bother double clutching when racing... although I still double clutching when down shifting at high revs, for the most part double clutching will slow you down.

yeah double clutching is time consuming, i even feel like a retard when i double clutch fast lol.

I'm putting my money on "your syncros are fine". You're shifting too fast. The ratio between first and second is pretty big (around 2:1). Shifting under normal driving you probably get out of first pretty soon, revs don't need to drop far, everything is pretty. When you race you probably take 1st up to 6K or so, which means the revs have to drop all the back to just below 3K to mesh, which takes longer than it should in a stock set up. Shift to early and you'll either get rejected or it will mesh (badly) and force the revs down hard.

So either shift earlier, or watch your revs more closely. Actually, do both.

It should'nt matter what revs you have- thats what the synchro is for. If you were doing a clutchless change I might see your point but erm.. no. I can take mine to the redline and bang it to second and guess what? No crunch. Any other car I've ever owned.. no crunch unless the synchro was worn. In fact I dont even take my foot of the gas when I race change so as to keep the revs up. The only problem I've had is with the rev limiter which I had to get used since it's the first car i've owned thats had one.

What you are saying is to let the revs fall between changes- in otherwords change slower or change at a lower rev rate which kinda defeats the purpose.

you dont let off the gas when you shift???? man i feel bad for your clutch..the rpms fall anyways when you push the clutch in cuz it goes in nutral, but i understand what mr1in6billion is saying it makes a lot of sence to me, thats the only time i have problems getting into second..wich it isnt even a problem getting in it just makes that sound other then that it goes in fine..

A lot of people don't take their foot off the gas while shifting. It's hard to tell whether it's your syncro or not, but if it is you'll know when it starts happening more often and while daily driving. Shouldn't crap out on you too soon though if it is.

I tried this yesterday and I feel like I will destroy the clutch if I drive like that for long... keeping your foot on the gas while shifting can't be healthy for the tranny components right?
