just bought my 1998 mx-3 yesterday and it came with a non-standard radio which I'd like to take out in favour for my blaupunkt head unit. Anyway, I can't for the life of me get the old one out.
The black plastic surround you see in the photos doesn't want to come off and there are no holes to poke a removal tool into, any ideas?
Cheers

WTH...where's the cubby hole? A double-din deck bracket maybe?

First of all, that is one dumbass radio install. The Mazda radio that was taken out the first time is a 1 DIN size so that a aftermarket radio will replace it without that huge black plastic piece. Once you do find out how to get the radio out find a junkyard MX-3 and get all the radio stuff that goes in that spot from the factory. Then install your Blaupunkt on the top half where the OEM radio went. You be left with a plastic pocket on the bottom half that you can use to hold a cell phone or some other small objects.

Thanks for all the comments
I'd spotted that cubby hole in pics of other mx3s and wondered why it I didn't have one. The sterio fitted seems to be normal size, its the same as my Blaupunkt. Have tried to remove the centre console but having trouble even doing that.
Trouble is the mx3 is pretty rare here in the uk so if I break something its a b*tch to find replacement parts

i don't know for certain, but possibly other Mazdas use a similar cubby hole...., may pay to check around?
