All your snotty-nosed IMO's wanted here!

Post by SuperK »

So I'm looking at some new front speakers, and I'm thinking of going with some Alpine Type S's.

Of course, I want to choose the BEST for my budget, so here's where you all come in.

Those are my budget... about 200 on crutchfield (expenisve and can be gotten cheapers elsewhere, but for reference's sake, that's it)

so, in the Alpine budget, what do you overly-opinionated gentlemen recommend in place of the Alpines?

Good set of speakers. Shallow mounting depth. The speakers themselves are good build quality (though the crossovers are a little cheap). Sound very good for the price, though, and handle a decent amount of power if you cross them over to a subwoofer.

Hands down far better for the money.........Sound good, loud, more durable ( marine safe ) and can take far more power than they are rated for.
Ive bridged a kicker 650.4 4 channel amp to just one set and they just kept cranking out crystal clear music at insane volume levels.
I also find that silk dome tweeters are far less offensive then titanium or other types.

BTW I think you need to ditch crutchfield :). The same set of alpine type S at this site = $124.00

believe me, I'm not going to purchase through crutchfield, I'm just using them as a price reference to compare 1 item in crutch to another item in crutch, since they're so popular.

But I'm liking those Polk's. Kinda can keep a momo theme along with those items in my interior as well.

Can anyone else second this ohpinion?

BTW, any recommended mounting bracket I need to use with this?
I've seen some generic mazda ones, but i want to make sure I get what's right for the speakers.
I would love to be able to display the speakers w/out the factory grille, but I don't know if I can pull that off effectively w/ the way the grilles are shaped.

I suggest Boston Acoustics. By far hands down the best quality speaker around IMO. They can get expensive and need a sub to push bas since they are purely meant for mids and highs.
As for a mouting bracket a simple piece of plywood cut to the shape of the door hole and then cut the center out for the speaker you buy is a sure fire way to make sure they will fit and you can choose the plywood thickness top suit your mounting needs.
I agree on the silk tweeters being less harsh on the highs, but they can be hard to find now-a-days. It seems that most are using metal tweeters which sound like crap in most cases. Silk tweeters are more likely in the higher end products and out of the 200 dollar range from what I've seen in the last few minutes of searching.

both the alpines and the polk's have the silkies and are in the 200 range.
Can you give me a type of boston speaker I can compare with? Remember, I've got to keep in my budget, too. I'd love to throw 700 bucks on a pair of speakers, but I've got nasty body work to attend to as well :(

Forgot to mention that if you do use the polks you will need to remove the factory grills and make a wood bracket, it's really simple and you can paint it with sandstone or fleckstone paint to match the 2 tone interior of the mx-3 + then you can use the momo grills which are pimp.

Without a wood bracket your window will not roll down all the way. It will go down most of the way and maybe stick up 2" at the highest point. This has to due with the huge magnet and motor assembly of the Polk MOMO's which can attest to they're power handling abilities.

Here's some Boston's for you. Same price as the polk's. I'm not a Boston fan myself and have never actually heard them but here ya go.

Here is a set I have heard though. They have a softer smoother response then the Polks and are extremely transparrent but can't play as loud. However this was what i had originally planned on going with till I figured I'd give Polk a try.

I'm running 6.5 polks off a 4 channel alpine. The speakers are only like 200 for 4 and the amp was about 200. It sounds great too.

Hmm, I'll only need a 2 channel amp, as I won't need rear speakers w/ a set of these. In fact, someone already pulled my rears out, so they're not there anymore.

They also put some small pioneers in there.
seeing as I own no tools and have no time, someone want to make some brackets for me? :D
I'll give you some money, haha!

Its fairly easy. I could probably knock a couple out with some spare mdf I have floating around. You would need to use wood filler to fill in the mounting holes and have to paint them if i did it.

If you could do that for me, that'd be great.
I don't know how much you spend on parts, but I'll give you 20+parts+shipping if it's real easy.
I'd like to know what kinda paint you get and where too. I'd be greatful :D

Like i said i have spare scrap MDF board. Meaning cost is nothing but time. Since its rather simple just give me a little time and when i can get to it I'll do it and send them free of charge. In fact I might do mine while I'm at it as not being able to roll window down all the wax kinda sucks.

Fleckstone paint :)
